When you're envisioning the accomplishment of a goal or dream, often we imagine the finished product and don't think or consider the process (look at your neighbor and say process) in between. When I initially dreamed of being a successful real estate investor, I pictured how wonderful it would feel to be financially free, travel the world and help other people. I never imagined the hell and high-water I would have to navigate to realize my dreams. When I had the bright idea to leave my good government job after 14+ years and go fulltime with real estate, I never imagined real estate market would crash send my finances spiraling to what seemed like the point of no return. There were so many times I planned, plotted and attempted to give up but there was always a tug, a fullness in my heart, a small voice that called to me from the other side of what I was facing. A voice saying keep going or keep pushing.
When I hear Adele’s song Hello From the Other Side, it makes me think of that voice, that tug which has been with me all the way. It calls me forward to continue on my journey to total financial freedom.
Here are the 3 greatest lessons i’ve learned on the road to a dream:
1. Choose Your Struggle - Choosing to struggling obviously is not a popular option for change. But for most of us, if we expect different results there must be change. Making a planned and conscious decision to temporarily sacrifice or adjustment your life to reach your goals is much more pleasant than being forced into change due to circumstances. It was my decision to continue renting from a family member (there were moments it felt like forever) that allowed me to leave a job, volunteer for 6 months and transition into working in my passion.
2. It’s Okay to Start Over - Depending on your perspective, starting over can be the worst of times or the best of times. I encourage you to choose the latter. Each time you start over there will alway be some information, improvements or insights you can take with you to make your tomorrow better. Thanks to my journey, I now know how to re-build credit and rapidly eliminate debt and I’ve helped 100’s of my clients to do so. They say success is the best revenge, so tell your past mistakes where they can go and start over!
3. Cash is King - Learning to live free without a dependence on debt has been the greatest ally on the road to a dream. It allowed more options for change, even when times where tough. One of the number one goals many clients have is to start their own business. And the vast majority of them where hindered from starting due to an over obligation to debt. So you ask, well I’m here now Ms. All Cash Queen where do I start? I’m glad you asked, lesson #1 Choose Your Struggle!
My challenge to you answer the question, what can you do TODAY to honor the voice calling you to your dreams? And be BOLD, post your "Hello" photo and make yourself accountable!
