Ever have one of those moments? You know, the moment when you can't remember what was the point of getting out of bed. I had one of those recently. I wanted to stop time for a second and get off this roller coaster called life. It's funny, really not funny at all, how you can be flying high as a kite one day and then dazed and confused the next. A few years ago, I was given this picture entitled "Struggling Forward”.
At the time I was at the height of my entrepreneurial hustle and my mottos were “I got this” and “bring it on!”
So energetic and hopeful, I promise this will end with encouragement but the middle section is kinda yucky.
A few years into the hustle, as more and more of life began to cave in on me, I took the picture down because I couldn't stand to look at it any more. I had had enough! All I wanted was to climb back into my box and hide. Fast forward to today, and I’ll be the first to admit there have been many days and seasons of struggle spread throughout my journey. The most beautiful and yet unfortunate truth about dreams is that they don’t go away.
I tried to climb back in the box and forget about my dreams but obviously and lucky for you it didn’t work.
Today my picture hangs proudly again in my office along with numerous milestones and accomplishments. The process to make your dreams and goals a reality can be ugly but the end result is 100% worth it! If you don’t beat me there I want you to meet me there, the finish line that is.
Here are 4 powerful tips to keep you moving forward to victory!
Are We There Yet? - When working towards a goal or dream, it’s easy to not notice your progress along the way. Constantly looking towards the end result is a constant reminder you're not there yet. Taking time to reflect or compare backwards allows you to see how much ground you've covered. Journaling or using a Passion Planner is a great way to keep track of your progress, stay focused and continue moving forward.
And Miles to Go Before I Sleep - Let’s face it success is not an overnight gig. There’s a cost for living your dreams, stepping out of the box and blazing trails. You will pay that cost in time, money and energy. But if you’re not careful you’ll lookup and discover yourself running on empty.
To help refill your tank create milestones, actual objects or items that represent what you’ve accomplished along the way.
I have all the “Going Away Luncheon” invites from every leap of faith I’ve taken over the past 10 years. When I’m feeling good and crazy and I mean good and crazy, I take a stroll back to see just how far i’ve come.
It reminds me “I may not be exactly where I want to be but thank goodness I’m not where I used to be!”
Use a Life Line - Entrepreneurship can seem a lonely road. Don’t hesitate to phone a friend. Preferable one who believes in you (crazy you and normal you) and will keep you motivated and accountable to your dreams. Other people have the amazing ability to see what we don't see. I’ve been told I’m pretty amazing and well, I believe it!
Rest, Doctor’s Orders - It’s crucial you add time to rest to your schedule and actually do it when the time comes. As well, don't be afraid to take a scheduled sabbatical from work or projects. Time away helps to improve production, creativity and yo sanity! Struggle or not, going back is not an option. So just keep going!
